Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with Restore Dental Academy for the Pink & White course, a two-day theory and hands-on program in London, dedicated to aesthetic dentistry, interdisciplinary treatment planning and the relationship between soft tissues and restorative outcomes.

One of the phrases we shared throughout the course was:

“Changing lives with millimetres.”

Because in aesthetic dentistry, that is often the reality.

Small adjustments in gingival architecture, tooth proportions, restorative design or tissue management can dramatically influence the final outcome of a smile. The difference between a good result and an exceptional one is frequently measured in millimetres.

Over two intensive days, we welcomed delegates from different parts of the world and explored how modern aesthetic dentistry requires much more than technical execution. Successful treatments depend on diagnosis, communication, biological understanding, facial analysis and careful planning.

The concept of “Pink & White” aesthetics focuses on the balance between two fundamental elements:

The pink: gingival tissues and periodontal health
The white: teeth, restorations and smile design

Neither can be considered independently. True aesthetic excellence comes from understanding how both components interact and how they contribute to facial harmony and natural-looking results.

Throughout the course, we discussed clinical protocols, treatment planning strategies and interdisciplinary workflows that help clinicians achieve predictable outcomes while respecting biology and long-term stability.

One of the most rewarding aspects of these educational events is the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues from different countries and professional backgrounds. Dentistry continues to evolve rapidly, and continuous education remains essential for maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

I would like to thank Restore Dental Academy for the invitation and all the delegates who joined us during these two fantastic days of learning, discussion and hands-on training.

Sharing knowledge is one of the most fulfilling parts of my professional journey, and I am grateful to be able to contribute to the growth of a community committed to excellence in aesthetic dentistry.

I look forward to seeing many of you again in future courses and educational programs.

The Truth About Smile Design: Interview on GDentalk

My Conversation with GDentalk: The Truth About Smile Design and Modern Cosmetic Dentistry

I recently had the pleasure of joining Dr. Simón Pardiñas on GDentalk, the podcast produced by Gaceta Dental, to discuss a topic that generates enormous interest among both patients and dental professionals: smile design and modern aesthetic dentistry.

Today, cosmetic dentistry is more popular than ever. Patients have access to countless images on social media, celebrity transformations and highly marketed treatments. However, this visibility has also created misconceptions about what truly makes a beautiful smile.

One of the key questions we addressed during the interview was whether smile design should be considered a treatment in itself. In my opinion, smile design is much more than choosing the shape or color of teeth. It is a comprehensive diagnostic and planning process that takes into account facial proportions, lip dynamics, gum health, dental function and, most importantly, the individual behind the smile.

We also discussed dental veneers and one of the most common misconceptions surrounding them: the belief that every veneer treatment requires significant tooth preparation. Modern dentistry offers increasingly conservative solutions, and in many cases, minimal or even no preparation may be required when treatment is properly planned.

Another important topic was the difference between natural-looking smiles and artificial-looking smiles. A successful aesthetic treatment should not immediately reveal itself as a dental procedure. The goal is not to create identical smiles, but rather to achieve harmony between the teeth, gums, lips and facial features. A great smile should feel authentic and personal.

Throughout the conversation, we explored how aesthetic dentistry differs across Europe, the United States and Dubai, where I have been practicing for more than two decades. Cultural preferences may vary, but the biological principles that guide successful treatment remain the same everywhere: respect for dental tissues, healthy gums, proper function and realistic patient expectations.

We also talked about some of the warning signs that clinicians should recognize when evaluating aesthetic cases. Technical excellence is essential, but understanding a patient’s motivations, expectations and psychology is equally important. Cosmetic dentistry is not only about teeth; it is about people.

Among the topics covered in the episode:

  • What smile design really means
  • Why a smile must integrate naturally with the face
  • When veneers are appropriate and when they are not
  • Ultra-white smiles versus natural aesthetics
  • Differences in cosmetic dentistry around the world
  • The risks of copying a celebrity smile
  • Common red flags in aesthetic patients
  • The importance of respecting biology and function
  • What happens when veneers are poorly planned or executed
  • Why patient psychology plays a crucial role in treatment success

Modern aesthetic dentistry is not about creating perfect teeth. It is about creating balance, confidence and natural beauty while preserving health and function.

A truly successful smile should never shout, “I’ve had cosmetic dentistry.”

It should simply say, “This feels like me.”

If you are interested in smile design, dental veneers, cosmetic dentistry or the philosophy behind natural aesthetic treatments, I invite you to watch or listen to the full episode of GDentalk.
